Hamster emergency at the Rockville, Md., shelter! The Montgomery County (Md.) Humane Society has dozens of hamsters looking for homes, and more are giving birth every day. This shelter has a high euthanasia rate. They have asked Small Angels to help by taking as many of the hamsters as we can, but so far we have had to turn them down because we have no available foster homes.
How can you help?
- Foster a hamster (or two!) for us. Fosters receive the cage and all the accessories they'll need (wheel, food dish, houses, etc.), as well as one bag of food and bedding. Small Angels pays for any necessary vet care. You provide love, daily socialization, and space in your home. Click here to download our foster care application.
- Adopt a hamster from Small Angels to make room in the rescue for some of those who are at the shelter. Check out our hamsters at smallangels.petfinder.com.
- Help spread the word! Even if you can't foster or adopt, you can help us by forwarding this message widely.
Hamsters generally come in three types. Syrian hamsters (sometimes called teddy bears) are the biggest, at about 6-8 inches. They are territorial and must live alone. Dwarf hamsters (sometimes called Siberians) are 3-4 inches and can live in same-gender pairs and trios if they have been together since birth. Because they are smaller and quicker than Syrians, they can be trickier to handle, but they may be more fun to watch! They are prone to diabetes and require a special diet that is easy to follow. Roborovskis are the tiniest of all, about 2 inches with very distinct markings that resemble eyebrows. They are extremely fast and not suitable for small children.
If you are interested in fostering, please let us know which species you would prefer to foster.
